His deep blue eyes matched so perfectly with his chestnut skin that it made his complexion glow. I kept staring at him as he ordered what I thought was a coffee. I had to remind my self to take a breath as I watched him. He wore a jean jacket over a burgundy sweater. I looked out the window as he turned to look in my direction. My cheeks flushed as I heard footsteps approaching me.
“Excuse me?” Said a deep voice. I slowly turned around to face him, the man in the burgundy sweater stood beside me.
“Yes?” I barley manged to make out the word.
“Can I help you with something?” He asked.
“No, why?” Did he notice me staring at him? A feeling of embarrassment hugged me close.
“Because I couldn’t help but notice you watching me order a coffee.” He said with a straight face. My eyes widened and my face turned a cherry red.
“Oh, I-uh..” I couldn’t come up with an excuse fast enough.
“Can I sit?” He nodded toward the seat across from me.
“Oh, sure.” I wasn’t expecting him to ask to sit with me, I was surprised he wasn’t grossed out by a random woman staring at him. He sat on the opposite side of the booth, and set his coffee cup down on the table. I took a sip of my latte even though it was still too hot to drink, i didn’t know what else to do. Should I say something? Should I tell him my name?
“So, do you come here often?” He asked. I took a deep breath before I answered him.
“Yeah actually. It’s my favourites cafe in town.” I set my latte down again.
“Oh really? This is my first time here.” He took a sip of his coffee, I watched the steam dance off the hot liquid, how did he not even flinch? His coffee was still steaming!
“Well what do you think of this place so far?” I asked.
“It’s alright, I guess. I haven’t been here enough to really know.”
“Fair enough.” The mans eyes gazed over to the small pile of MISSING posters on the table. He immediately sat straighter, he seemed more alert now.
“I’m sorry.” He spoke in a neutral tone.
“Oh it’ okay.” He grabbed one of the MISSING posters and looked at it.
“How long has Grace been missing?” My heart stopped, how did he know her name?
“Wait, how do you know my sisters name?”
“It says on the poster.” He chuckled.
“Oh yeah. Duh! Sorry I have been a mess lately. She has been missing for five years.” He put the poster back in the pile.
“And you’re still hanging up posters for her? You must really miss her.” I gazed at him with fury, he has no right to judge me for hanging up posters for my missing sister!
“No offence.” He finally said. I wanted to yell at him, ask him how he would feel if his sibling went missing. But I just met him, I can’t scare him away just yet. But I also can’t tell him the reason why I’m still hanging up posters, now that would really scare him away.
“None taken.” I took one last sip of my latte before setting the empty cup down on the shiny table.
“Well I should go, lots of work to be done.” He took a small business card out of his pocket and set it in front of me.
“Encase you want to hang out again.” He left the cafe so fast, it was almost like I blinked and he was gone. I looked at the card, apparently he is a co-manger of a web design company. Wait… This is the same company my Uncle used to work for. He is retired now and lives in a nursing home. He has Alzheimer’s.
I picked up the pile of MISSING posters and left the cafe to go visit my uncle.
