I woke up and I was laying on the couch in my living room. What had waken me was the sound of my phone ringing. I groaned and got up. It said that the caller was a private number. Who could be bugging me? I just wanted to sleep, all that worrying was making me exhausted.
“Hello?” I said as I put the phone to my ear. Someone whispered through the phone, it was too quiet to hear, but their voice was deep and rough.
“Hello?” I said a little more impatient than before.
“Chloe?” I heard Grace say from the other end of the call. It’s Grace! She is still alive! And she reached out to me again. This is great news! What was first happiness soon became terror as Grace spoke again.
“Z-Zara… H-hurt me Chloe. But h-he will kill me.” And the call hung up. What? No! She can’t be gone again!
“No! Grace? Hello? What do you mean Zara hurt you? Where are you? Are you okay? Grace! Please Grace answer me!” Tears rapidly fell down my cheeks. And just like that Grace was gone again. But… What did she mean Zara hurt her? Zara is our Mother’s name. So, is Grace telling me that our own Mother hurt her? My knees buckled and I fell back onto the couch. My phone slid out of my hand and hit the floor, it shattered into a million pieces. And, who is ‘he’? Could it be someone we know? Is ‘he’ Grace’s kidnapper? Did she just tell me that he is going to kill Grace? I need to find out who he is, and soon. And suddenly, everything went black.
I woke up and I was laying in my bed, my heart racing and my forehead dripping with sweat. I took a deep breath as I realized it was all just a dream.
“it was just a bad dream, Chloe. You are okay.” I told myself. I knew there was no way I would ever get back to sleep. Not knowing if Grace is dead or alive. So I got up and walked to my bathroom. I splashed water on my face from the bathroom sink. The water was freezing, but it helped me to relax. I looked up and made eye contact with myself in the mirror.
“God, I’m going crazy.” I said. I blinked and saw that Grace was standing behind me. A slash on her neck and blood spilling from her eyes. Her head was tilted just slightly at me.”Chloe…” She whispered, but her lips did not move. I was frozen in fear, I couldn’t move or blink. I just stood there and stared at her. Goosebumps covered my tense skin, and my eyes started to water.
“Zara…” Whispered Grace’s disembodied voice. Grace reached her hand out to me. The lights started to flicker, then as I turned around everything stopped. Grace was gone again. I took a deep breath.
“Chloe, you are just seeing things.” I turned back around to the mirror and lights shut off. I tried to find the switch on the wall. As I flipped the switch Grace was standing behind me with a knife at my throat. My screams echoed into the night.
